9B5 Wed 23/2: The Gettysburg Address and Convincing Your Parents to Let You...

1. Let's read the Gettysburg Address aloud and discover why this is such an effective but short speech.
2. HW: Choose a topic to convince your parents of and write a very short speech that can be delivered in 1 min. Write 3 versions of the speech using each mode of persuasion.
Convincing parent to let me play rugby:
  • Ethos: make it about me, power of a life experience: 
Mum, Dad, I want to play rugby as my winter sport this year. I think it would give me good memories I'd have for my whole life - playing sport with friends and big training sessions. I all think it would help get me a head start on bulking up which I'd need for the rest of my life. Until I play rugby, I don't think any of us should or really can write out

  • Pathos: spiritual: 
Mum, Dad, I want to play rugby as my winter sport this year. I really think that I would make a lot more friends playing speaking of which all my friends are so i could get lifts. Making new friends I'd have for life is a good thing. I also think that it would be good socially for me to play kids from other schools. Besides of which this is something that I've wanted to do for a long time and it would mean a lot to me because Grandpa played it and went on about how good it was and we would always watch it together too.
  • Logos: lot of facts to deal with, intellectual speech:
Mum, Dad, I want to play rugby as my winter sport this year. I've done some research rebel has a big discount on old model boots so they won't be expensive and I have most of the other gear so it wouldn't be expensive. I really think it be good for me to learn about what other kids my age do and what sports they play.

    I believe that your logos was your best speech because you actual have given some facts about prices for boots and when you say younger kids play you are sort of using blackmail which would be considered pathos but besides that all round good

    I think LOGOS is the most effective speech because it not only shows that he wants to do rugby but it also shows that he's thought about reasons that could help him persuade his parents to let him because he uses facts like "rebel has a big discount on old model boots so they won't be expensive and I have most of the other gear so it wouldn't be expensive". I think for the second sentence he should say "so it would be even less expensive" instead of "so it wouldn't be expensive" two time.
