Tuesday 1/3: MLK's "I Have a Dream"

1. Sydney will have a fashion week coming up in May. Do you think that festivals like these still have a place considering all of the devastation in the region (Queensland + NZ)?
Yes i do and perhaps a lot of the money if not all the money that is profitable should be donated to the floods and earthquakes. I think that because of the floods and earthquakes these should all go ahead

While I can see why a lot of people would see this as irrelevant, I think that if even and advertisement of '10% will get donated to the natural disasters,' would make NY fashion week earn more anyway and perhaps let some people in free to get their mind off the fact that their house was destroyed

To conclude, i see no legitimate reason why fashion week shouldn't go ahead and a good opportunity has come up to help the people in need.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate - we cannot consecrate - we cannot hallow - this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. 1.             What do you notice about the length of the speech?
the length of this speech is significantly shorter than most

2.             What do you notice about the organisations? 
It's pretty well organised; short and sweet

3.             What do you think is the thesis of the speech?
The civil war must end

4.             Name two techniques (with quotes) which you feel are successfully employed and discuss why you feel they are so effective.
"that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom"
Personification is used well here because he talks about God and how he will save the country - country is worthy.

5.             Why do you think that the concluding statement is considered so important and powerful by many Americans to this day?
I think it's considered so important because it symbolizes democracy and how important and wanted democratic societies are

Speech to the Troops at Tilbury 1

My loving people,
        We have been persuaded by some that are careful of our safety, to take heed how we commit our selves to armed multitudes, for fear of treachery fear of a traitor killing her, (trust - thesis) ; but I assure you I do not desire to live to distrust my faithful and loving people. Let tyrants fear, I have always so behaved myself that, under God, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal hearts and good-will of my subjects; and therefore I am come amongst you, as you see, at this time, not for my recreation and disport, but being resolved, in the midst and heat of the battle, to live and die amongst you all; to lay down for my God, and for my kingdom, and my people, my honor and my blood, even in the dust. Metaphor of their strength and power - I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king - Personal humiliation, and of a king of England too, and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realm; to which rather than any dishonour shall grow by me, I myself will take up arms, I myself will be your general, judge, and rewarder of every one of your virtues in the field . 3. How does Queen Elizabeth talk about herself in this speech? (use quotes in your answer)
"weak and feeble woman" Queen Elizabeth uses herself as a comparison in this speech there by letting herself on to be weaker than her men making them stronger than her and capable of winning this war.

4. Why do you think this is an effective way to refer to herself?
It it effective because the men all respect her so much if she tells them that they're better and flatters them - pumping them up.

2009 Naplan writing

DISCOVERY:
The house alarm went off like a tornado was rumbling up the driveway. Again. Groaning, I sat up shook my head as I looked at my watch. 4:00am. I swore as eventually someone turned off the alarm. Probably mum. I -rolled over and tried to go back to sleep but I was awake now so my morning holiday sleep-in was gone. I sighed, got up, got dressed and went to the lounge to watch some TV. Did TVs even work at this hour? I mean it was now 4:15. I clicked the on button and the TV turned on. I went to the Foxtel remote and started scrolling through channels randomly putting on different shows. Then, I made a discovery. 

I know that you can learn a lot from watching TV, but who would've thought you could learn a lot just by looking at a TV? In the reflection of the large screen, I think I saw what had been setting off the alarm. There was a large foam box, large enough to set off any alarm, in the middle of our driveway. But what 
interested me was how it seemed to be even now moving with no breeze. I went outside to check it out.

I could hear noises coming from within the box as i got close. Small animal perhaps. Still too hard to tell so I opened it.
